Who We Are

Empower Earth system science and predictions by developing model testing and evaluation solutions that bridge research and operational communities

The DTC: Teamwork - Collaboration - Partnership. We work with sponsors NOAA and U.S. Air Force as well as team members/sponsors NSF NCAR and NOAA OAR.

The Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) is a collaborative partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), US Air Force, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The DTC comprises an integrated team of scientists and software engineers from NSF NCAR, NOAA, the University of Colorado’s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), and Colorado State University’s Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA), where a majority of the NSF NCAR staff are affiliated with the Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) and a majority of the NOAA and CI staff are affiliated with the Global Systems Laboratory (GSL).

Governed and advised by external committees, the team engages with the broader Earth System Model (ESM) community in testing and evaluating advanced models, technologies, and techniques, as well as developing valuable testing and evaluation tools.  The DTC facilitates the research-to-operations paradigm through engagement with the broader research community, while leveraging advanced in-house tools to provide timely feedback on promising model innovations for potential operational implementation.
