Jimy Dudhia is a Scientist VI at the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology (MMM) Laboratory. With nearly 35 years at NCAR, he brings a depth of experience and expertise in atmospheric physics that has made him an invaluable scientific resource for several Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) projects. Through his expertise in atmospheric physics, thoughtful collaboration, and exceptional attention to detail, Jimy has made numerous valuable contributions to the DTC’s testing and evaluation efforts.

For more than 10 years, Jimy has served as an active internal consultant for the DTC, contributing to the UFS Physics T&E, MMM Physics T&E, and CCPP projects. He brings a critical eye to T&E analyses, shrewdly identifying issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. His ability to spot potential bugs in model diagnostic output and uncover gaps in analytical approaches has helped the teams improve both the quality and scientific rigor of their own work.

One example of Jimy’s impact was his examination of  diurnal anomalies to help bridge the gap between mean-state and tendency analyses in studies of diurnal variation. He has also provided important guidance on which fields should be examined when implementing MMM physics into the CCPP Single Column Model (SCM), ensuring that the implementation is scientifically sound and useful for evaluating model behavior.

Jimy’s contributions go beyond identifying individual issues. He brings deep expertise in MMM physics that has strengthened the DTC’s connection with physics and modeling development. He has encouraged the team to critically examine whether momentum forcing in the CCPP SCM is realistic, an important consideration when simulating cases and processes that are sensitive to momentum fields. He has also helped the team develop a better understanding of the relationship between the full forecast model and the CCPP SCM.

What makes Jimy especially valuable is his collaborative approach. He is consistently prepared and engaged, and he approaches complex problems with both critical thinking and curiosity. Whether addressing a fundamental scientific question or investigating a small but consequential detail, he is willing to work closely with colleagues to find the root cause of an issue and determine the best path forward. His insights have supported better decision-making, increased productivity, and strengthened the overall impact of the DTC teams.

Jimy also demonstrates remarkable adaptability as the focus of projects evolve. He remains enthusiastic, responsive, and generous in sharing his knowledge across broader community activities, including both physics testing and CCPP software development. His willingness to share this experience provides the DTC teams with valuable perspectives that extend well beyond any single project.

Jimy is a tremendous asset to the numerical weather prediction community, and the DTC is fortunate to benefit from his expertise. His scientific insight, attention to detail, and collaborative spirit exemplify the kind of partnership that strengthens both individual projects and the broader NWP community.
