HWRF Online Tutorial V3.9a | Datasets

Acquire input data

TCVitals data filesUsers will need the datasets listed below as input to HWRF system:

  • Fix data for time independent input files
  • GFS gridded data for WRF initialization
  • GDAS gridded and nemsio data, for nest initial conditions
  • Loop current data for ocean initialization
  • Observational data for GSI in prepBUFR format
  • Adeck files

Users need to stage input datasets on disk to work on the tutorial. A case from Hurricane Matthew (2016), initialized on October 04, 2016, 00 UTC, is used for this online tutorial and the neccessary input datasets are available on NCAR's Cheyenne supercomputer. On Cheyenne, PLEASE DO NOT COPY to your working directory. The tutorial will provide instructions on how to configure the input data location on disk.

Users who do not have access to NCAR's Cheyenne can access the input datasets here.

In order to use the DTC-supported scripts for running HWRF, these datasets must be stored following a specific directory structure in a disk accessible by the HWRF scripts. This directory structure is listed below:

  • SYNDAT-PLUS/ --> Contains TC Vitals
  • gfs.YYYYMMDDHH/ --> GFS initial and forecast times nemsio files, conventional observations
  • gdas1.YYYYMMDDHH/ --> Previous 6 h GDAS 3-, 6- and 9 h forecast
  • loop/ --> Loop current for ocean initialization
  • fix/ --> Time independent input files
  • abdecks/ --> A-deck files for plotting
