The overarching objective for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Research to Operations (R2O) Initiative is the design, development, and implementation of the Next-Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS), with a goal to provide enhanced forecasting capability from a few hours to 30 days. One of the major work areas for NGGPS is improving model physics packages to better describe weather phenomenon at global to regional scales. NGGPS’s strategy for addressing the need to develop a next generation atmospheric physics suite includes community involvement, Scientifically-based Working Groups (SWGs), a development strategy that includes both a focus on single process upgrades and combinations of closely allied processes, enhanced diagnostics and testing and evaluation.

The goals of this workshop were:

  • Provide a forum for discussing current atmospheric physics development directed at addressing the NGGPS Physics Team Plan and identify missing pieces in this plan.
  • Discuss the framework for distributed atmospheric physics development and protocols/procedures for working within this framework.
